Framed NCR Embroidery

I finished my WIP from my very first post. It has taken me several weeks of on-again-off-again-mostly-off stitching, whenever it pops into my head. This morning I painted a thick strip across the bottom using a mixture of crimson acrylic paint mixed with a fabric paint medium, with a tiny amount of ultramarine and burnt umber mixed in to darken and grey down the red.

Waiting for the paint to dry.

The stitching is a random assortment of satin stitch, long and short stitch, and split stitch, with two french knots thrown in for the pupils of the eyes.  Although I love the look of the finished piece, the fabric is wrinkled more than I would have hoped.  The embroidery hoop completely failed to keep the fabric taut, which is unfortunate.  A new hoop is on my list of things to get in the future.  I am hoping that given some time laying flat, I'll be able to steam some of the wrinkles away.

This was a really fun exercise in embroidery for me.  I didn't plan ahead at all, just sketched out the shape onto the osnaburg in pencil and started stitching with whatever I had on hand.  The bear is actually done in five different shades of brown, because I wanted to use what I had on hand and I didn't have two skeins of any one color. I actually love the subtle shading that resulted from that.

This is my favorite part of the whole piece.
